I too have been meditating around this passage. Those in the crowd were mostly those who the religious leaders said were no hopers- ill or disbled, too poor and busy scratching a living or otherwise shut out of the Temple sacrifices and therefor from God's forgiveness- They are blessed not because they are poor, disabled as such but because knowing they are at the bottom they are ready to turn to God. Without poer in society or control over their lives, they are overwhelmed when Jesus says they can be forgiven by God without all the trappings of the Priests and their rules.
WE are so sure of being in control we don't think we need Him</description>
